Share this Set in a medieval fantasy world, D&D allows you to experience stories and adventures full of endless possibilities and amazing surprises. The Basic Rules for Dungeons & Dragons is a PDF that covers the core of the tabletop game. The Basic Rules runs from levels 1 to 20 and covers the cleric, fighter, rogue, and wizard, presenting what we view as the essential subclass for each. It also provides the dwarf, elf, halfling, and human as race options; in addition, the rules contain 120 spells, 5 backgrounds, and character sheets. But the best part?

The Basic Rules is a free PDF. Anyone can download it from our website. We want to put D&D in as many hands as possible, and a free, digital file is the best way to do that. Using These Rules The Basic Rules document is divided into three parts.

Part 1 is about creating a character, providing the rules and guidance you need to make the character you’ll play in the game. It includes information on the various races, classes, backgrounds, equipment, and other customization options that you can choose from. Many of the rules in part 1 rely on material in parts 2 and 3. Part 2 details the rules of how to play the game, beyond the basics described in this introduction. That part covers the kinds of die rolls you make to determine success or failure at the tasks your character attempts, and describes the three broad categories of activity in the game: exploration, interaction, and combat.

Part 3 is all about magic. It covers the nature of magic in the worlds of D&D, the rules for spellcasting, and a selection of typical spells available to magic-using characters (and monsters) in the game. I'm playing my first ever game of DnD with some friends in a few weeks. We will be playing the starter set box as our intro. (edit - we will all be first timers to DnD and tabletop RPG except the DM) I thought it could be useful for everyone to familiarise themselves with the rules beforehand and to have the rules available during the game.

The full basic rules PDF goes up to level 20 but not all will be relevant and I don't want our players to feel overwhelmed. I'm not sure I can tell everyone to buy their own starter set, it seems a little extreme. Is the 32 page rulebook available as a PDF anywhere?

Edit - legitimately! In regards to reading the rules as a group ahead of time, do you have any brand-spanking new players?

I just ran the Starter Set for a group that included 2 people who had never touched an RPG before, and we started out by reading the rules out loud. However, after about 5 pages we stopped at the request of the new players. Without any prior experience in RPGs, they had nothing to reference or compare the rules to while we were going over it. Because they had questions about nearly everything, they had no questions since everything was unfamiliar.

We found that simply jumping into the game and answering questions as we go worked best. Instead of frontloading them with all of the information, we could go over skill checks when they came up, and how combat works once that started. Simply answering questions as they arrived was much easier than attempting to just give all of the info before starting. I've been planning a starter kit game with some online friends for a while, and what I did was copy and paste some basic information they might want to know beforehand into text files (mainly what abilities/skills do, how modifiers work, and the list of combat actions) and plan out how to explain combat during the first encounter, with some notes along the lines of 'if X happens, provide (insert condensed explanation of how this works here).' I'm planning on doing something similar with additional things as they come up, like the exploration rules.

Wizards has been shy about committing either way about whether any retail PDFs will be available. Its unlikely they'll include a free version of the starter set book, especially with D&D Basic. You could try marking specific pages from Basic I guess. Like just the intro, the basic d20 mechanic stuff and maybe the first page or two of each class? Players rarely even need to read the rules cover to cover. Leveling up gets read as it happens and you don't really need to worry about the mechanics of other classes, once they've decided which ones to play.
